Oman coach relishes underdog role
“I can’t say I’m confident, but everything is open,” the burly
Czech told The Daily Yomiuri. “Japan is strong because of the strong
quality of the league. Japan was always favorite for me before the
group kicked off.
“My goal was to prepare trouble for Japan and now we are going
shoulder to shoulder with them. But we must respect the quality of
our foe, this is important.”
“We have seven players now playing outside Oman and I had to use
this game as preparation for Wednesday,” said Macala. “We have
everybody together for 10 days. Iraq is always a strong team and they
played with their usual style, very strong and physical. The result
wasn’t important, it was just important I saw the players.
“Against Japan it will be different. A friendly game is a friendly
game. After this game only the winner can continue and the loser is
finished. And if we beat them 1-0 then it will be interesting because
it goes down to the last game.”
“We are not under pressure, this is different to Japan,” said
Macala of the low expectations on his side. “If we draw 0-0 everybody
will be happy. Oman can’t compare to Japan, but of course if we are
knocked out we will be disappointed. But if Japan loses it is a big
shock.
“Maybe we have a 10 or 20 percent chance but we have got an
opportunity. We know what we have to do. It’s clear. I’m a coach and
I want a good result. We have fantastic players and in football you
never know.”
“Sometimes football has no logic and before the game kicks off we
are in a nice position,” he said. “We are not out of the competition
and that’s the main thing. Now the Japanese can’t say they are coming
here for a nice trip.
“Our chance is here because we are playing at home with our
supporters and Japan is stronger in Japan than outside. I’m happy
this game is here. The Japanese can’t sleep quietly until the 90
minutes are over.
Church
